The recognition of the protected origin, which occurred in 1996, in just a few years gave rise to a resumption of cultivation and frequent and regular monitoring of the San Marzano genotypes available in order to select the varietal panorama in order to guarantee greater cultivation diffusion while always remaining within the territory of the Nocerino-Sarnese countryside (a plain densely covered by material of volcanic origin), the geographical area of ​​the PDO consists of forty-one municipalities belonging to the Provinces of Salerno, Naples and Avellino.
